**Please note: As of January 13, 2025, this application will be used for both Alliant’s LA-Area Fires: Support for Basic Needs application capped at $250 per student and the broader Student Emergency Fund per all criteria included below.**

Life happens. We believe all students should have access to resources they need to succeed in college and finish their education. The Student Emergency Fund is an emergency grant for Alliant International University students who are dealing with unanticipated and/or catastrophic life events that might otherwise cause the student to stop or pause their educational goals. The funding is provided by the Alliant Education Foundation and is managed by a campus committee. Applications are accepted for consideration by June 30, 2025. Applications will be reviewed and grants awarded based on available funds. Once funds are exhausted, additional applications will not be accepted or reviewed. All award decisions are final.

Students are eligible to receive funding once an academic year. Awards are generally capped at $500.00. Please note, the Student Emergency Fund may affect future financial aid award packages for students and may be considered taxable income. Student considering applying are urged to consult with their financial aid advisor or the Student Business Services office for more information regarding the impact of this grant.

This grant will only be awarded after a student has submitted an online application, provided supporting documentation of their emergency, and submitted a personal statement. Please note, every situation is considered on a case-by-case basis. The Committee will consider the nature and urgency of each situation. Generally, in order to access the fund, a student must have exhausted all other available financial options (which may include financial aid awards). However, this looks different for every student. The Committee encourages all students experiencing an emergency to apply so options can be explored.

Tragically the Hodgkin's disease, which she had battled earlier in her life, had returned.

While continuing her studies at CSPP, Ferne took her chemotherapy treatments and worked at The Escondido Youth Encounter where she was considered a wonderful psychologist. Continuing her classes to the end, Ferne succumbed to the disease in October of 1987.

In memory of Ferne and her dedication to psychology, her parents Dr. Edward and Mrs. Leslea Miller, other family members and friends established the Ferne Miller Memorial Research Fund.

Originally, this scholarship was for students conducting research in the area of psychosocial oncology, including projects that study how psychological and environmental factors may affect the etiology, disease course and adaptation to cancer and other terminal diseases, however, the Miller Family has decided to broaden the focus to support dissertations across the spectrum of clinical psychology.
